Message from Head of Secondary

Message from Andy Sandercock– Head of Secondary

Our aim in the Secondary phase of the academy is to ensure that we are fully preparing our young people for their future education and careers beyond school. We work with all of our students to enable them to be fully equipped with the qualifications, knowledge and skills that will enable them to progress successfully to the next stage in their education and lives.

In Years 7 to 9, our broad and balanced curriculum reinforces and develops

"We have excellent, specialist teaching areas and classrooms for all subject areas and have three designated ICT suites, as well as laptops being available within subject areas and interactive whiteboards in most classrooms."

individual students’ fundamental skills in English, Maths and Science, augmented by providing opportunities to expand their knowledge and understanding of the world around them through their other curriculum subjects. We have invested significantly in our excellent teaching staff to ensure that class sizes remain small (typically 24 students or less in a class) and have access to support from our Learning Inclusion Team, for any individual student who is identified as needing additional learning intervention.

Our offer of a wide selection of courses and qualifications at Key stage 4 (Years 10 and 11) allows all of our students to personalise their career pathways to suit their own particular strengths, preferences and progression routes. Please click here for a list of all of the courses we offer at KS4.

We ensure that all students receive one-to-one career advice from a specialist careers adviser, together with careers events in conjunction with Bridgwater College. Each student begins their individual ‘Academy Ambition Plan’ to support them in planning for the future. This plan is begun in Year 7 and follows each student throughout their time in the Secondary phase, and is updated as the individual student grows and develops, but always with an aim of fulfilling their ambitions, career and life goals.

We have excellent, specialist teaching areas and classrooms for all subject areas and have five designated ICT suites, as well as laptops being available within subject areas and interactive whiteboards in most classrooms.

Underpinning the subject curriculum is a wide ranging Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHEE) programme led by tutors for all of our students. It encompasses relevant life issues such as Sex and Relationships education, Careers and Drugs education and Managing Personal Finances, as well as a wide variety of other relevant topics, to prepare young people for the challenges of the twenty first century.

Our pastoral system is a real strength of the Academy. Our pastoral staff are readily available to support any issues that our students may have in their academic progress and attendance. They work with parents/carers to enable our students to get back to focusing on achieving their academic and career potential.

We are also immensely proud of the wealth and diversity of the extra-curricular opportunities on offer for all of our students in the secondary phase. These include Sport’s activities and teams, theatre productions, foreign trips, subject clubs and curriculum theme days, for example on ‘Personal Safety’. Please click here for a full list of all of the extra-curricular opportunities on offer in the Secondary phase.

Our Employability Awards are a fundamental part of our ethos across the Academy of ensuring our students are preparing for the world of work. This is supported by EDF energy and provide opportunities for students to gain credits for challenges that they complete, linked to discrete employability skills. We are confident that these awards will assist in giving those students a distinct advantage when it comes to securing employment in the future.

We are proud of our academy and would encourage you to come and see it for yourself. If you are interested in visiting us for a tour of the Academy, please contact us to make an appointment. We are particularly keen to show you the Academy when the students are actively learning so we would encourage you to book within these times if possible. I look forward to meeting you.
